Welcome to the official stock photo repository of Manilatown Media, a component of the Manilatown Heritage Foundation. This site is not intended to be an edited portfolio showcase, but rather a storage catalog.

Background: The International Hotel was the last building in a once thriving community known as Manilatown. During San Francisco's plans for redevelopment in the 60's the elderly tenants of predominantly Filipinos and Chinese were evicted. The official notice was served in 1968 followed by a nine year battle to save the community.

The eviction of the International Hotel took place August 4, 1977 and became another infamous fact of Asian-American history.

In 1972 a workshop of photographers, artists, and writers began at The International Hotel. It was founded by Jim Dong.

Currently the core of The Manilatown Heritage Foundation Archive begins with four photographers of that group, Jim Dong, Chris Fujimoto, Freddy Mar, and Tony Remington. Their images may be recognized by the two letter prefix preceding  number of each image name:

Jim Dong: JD_0xxx, Chris Fujimoto: CF_0xxx, Freddy Mar: FM_0xxx, and Tony Remington: TR_0xxx

Recently a new addition of multi-media recordings by Norman Jayo (NJ_0xxx) have been added under "Other media."

Manilatown Media is a continued work in progress, but due to Covid-19 site access to our artifacts have been currently limited.
